On Thursday 19th September, 2024, the Mental Health Club visited Ruvimbo Special School which is located in Southerton, Harare. This visit followed the club's initiatives through fundraising to acquire stationery to assist in the educational activities of the school.
Not only did we present the donation to them (which included books, pencils, crayons, paint and brushes, flashcards and bond paper just to name a few), we had an opportunity to interact with the students there; which was quite a memorable. It was truly an amazing experience as we learnt that the students are not "disabled" but are just differently able. Even though they may look different, speak differently and even behave differently, that does not give us the right to discriminate against them or be judgemental. As learners, we appreciated the unique abilities our new friends are blessed with, which enable them to create exceptional crafts such as beaded bags and detergents as well as their different learning abilities and stages, which was truly interesting and eye opening to us.
As the mental health club, we wish to let world know that the pupils at Ruvimbo Special School are equally human, special and precious in God's eyes. We thank the school authorities for giving us the opportunity to embark on this selfless initiative and we hope to continue engaging with them.
